The sleepy United States box office finally lifted its eyelids over the holiday weekend. “Bob Marley: One Love,” a feel-good musical biopic, was on track to take in $33.2 million from Friday through Monday, for a strong total of roughly $51 million since opening on Valentine’s Day, according to Paramount Pictures. “Excuse me while I light my spliff,” read a celebratory post on the official X account for Marley, who died in 1981. “One Love,” which cost about $70 million to make, landed in what has emerged over the last year as a box office sweet spot — stories that feel both nostalgic and new — allowing it to overcome weak reviews, box office analysts said. “Madame Web” was on track to sell $17.6 million in tickets from Friday through Monday, for a total of $25.8 million since arriving on Valentine’s Day, according to Sony Pictures.

Director Nolan first earned critical acclaim for his psychological thriller "Memento" (2001). Carrie-Anne Moss and Guy Pearce in "Memento." YouTube via Newmarket FilmsSummary: Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce) uses photographs and tattoos to piece together evidence to track down his wife's killer, but he suffers from a unique form of amnesia that prevents him from creating new memories. Why you'll like it: Like "Inception," this psychological thriller centers on a man's obsessive love for his wife and how his emotions cloud his greater judgment. The two films also share Nolan's love for nonlinear storytelling; largely told in reverse, "Memento" unravels in a unique way, withholding vital information from viewers until the final sequence.

Waystar provides large healthcare providers with payments software. Photo: AlamyOne of the last big IPOs of the year just got delayed as the short-lived rebound in the new-issue market unravels. Waystar was set to launch its roadshow to pitch investors this week, but now is not expected to do so until December at the earliest, people familiar with the matter said. The healthcare-payments company, which at one point was expected to fetch a valuation in the high-single-digit billions, will likely wait until 2024, some of the people said.

A gentle downtrend in foreign direct investment gave way to a steep drop last quarter and inflows to China slammed to their lowest since records began 25 years ago, raising the prospect that the long-term trend is turning. Sources have told Reuters the Biden administration is likely to adopt new outbound investment restrictions on China in the coming weeks. Japan, the U.S. and Europe have already restricted the sale of high-tech chipmaking tools to Chinese companies while China has hit back by throttling exports of raw materials. To be sure, investment flows often fluctuate and many firms aren't leaving China completely or aren't leaving at all. "A lot of our clients are worried about their exposure to China as a sole country of supply."

Coins and banknotes of China's yuan are seen in this illustration picture taken February 24, 2022. BEIJING'S DILEMMALocal government debt reached 92 trillion yuan ($12.8 trillion), or 76% of economic output in 2022, up from 62.2% in 2019. To avoid that risk, the adviser suggested all stakeholders bear some of the burden: financial institutions, local governments, Beijing and society at large. From 2015 to 2018, local governments issued some 12 trillion yuan of bonds to swap for off-balance sheet debt. For the local debt problem to stop re-occuring policymakers need to implement profound changes to how the economy works.

But even though the scam targeted Morgan Stanley clients and the advisor admitted using a Morgan Stanley product to carry it out, the firm has fought efforts to hold it responsible. "So, effectively, Morgan Stanley is lending money to the victims of this scheme and that money then gets diverted into Shawn Good's pocket," Easley said. Morgan Stanley, which topped earnings expectations Tuesday thanks in large part to its wealth management business, declined an interview request. But more important than all of that, she said, was that he worked for Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley was among 16 firms charged, all admitting they violated federal securities laws.

The Supreme Court’s rejection on Friday of President Biden’s student debt relief plan instantly unravels one of the president’s signature efforts and ratchets up the pressure on him to find a new way to make good on a promise to a key constituency as the 2024 presidential campaign gets underway. When Mr. Biden announced last summer that his government would forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt, student advocacy groups and many progressives cheered the move, which was projected to help 40 million people and cost $400 billion. “People can start finally to climb out from under that mountain of debt,” Mr. Biden said. His plan, which came after months of agonizing about who it would benefit and whether it was too costly, would have been a centerpiece of his argument to voters that his economic agenda is designed to help low- and middle-income Americans blaze a path to greater prosperity. Instead, a majority of the justices agreed with critics who said the president’s debt relief plan went beyond the president’s authority under congressional legislation allowing changes to student loans during a public emergency.

At the start of Robert Icke’s “The Doctor,” the actress Juliet Stevenson stands alone in a spotlight onstage. I’m a doctor.”As the play’s title character, a grammatically exacting neurosurgeon named Ruth Wolff, Stevenson will repeat those last two phrases many times as events unfold and Ruth’s clarity and intellectual certainties erode. Eventually they will transmute into something far more inchoate as her life unravels, and self-doubt begins to permeate her conviction that being a doctor is all that matters. In Icke’s version, the issues go beyond questions of medical ethics and religious affiliations to include identity politics and cancel culture. The play, and Stevenson, received rave reviews when “The Doctor” was first presented in 2019 at London’s Almeida Theater, where Icke was then the artistic director, and later after it transferred to the West End.

Journal Editorial Report: The state may force everyone to pay for centuries-old wrongs. Images: AFP/Getty Images/The Sacramento Bee/APRemember when President Biden and progressives last year accused meat packers of colluding to fatten their profits. Tyson Foods last week reported its first quarterly loss since 2009 as meat prices tumbled. Tyson’s stock plunged after it reported anemic sales and downgraded its forecast. The quarterly loss at the largest U.S. meat supplier marks a stunning reversal from 2021 and early last year when it earned record profits amid a run-up in meat prices.

Despite its multiple interpretations and approaches, success is widely gauged by a railway’s operating ratio, a simple measure of how much it spends to make a buck. Union Pacific’s peers improved similarly, indicative of the antiquated ways the industry had been deploying resources. Union Pacific also found itself unable to bring back enough furloughed workers in areas where they were most needed. “In a significant departure from the railroad industry's recent past, we deliberately moved away from a singular focus on operating ratio,” he told lawmakers. “If we wanted to drive [operating ratio] lower over time, we could,” the board wrote in a letter to shareholders in late 2021.
UBS's Art Cashin isn't surprised to see stocks struggling to continue the rally seen at the start of the year. There's historically weakness in the latter half of January, he said Thursday on CNBC's " Squawk on the Street ." The rally was "new money for the new year," said Cashin, director of floor operations for UBS Financial Services at the New York Stock Exchange. The next key level he will be watching on the S & P 500 is if it falls to 3,800. This will be a key test as millions travel for the event and could spread Covid-19 and push back the country's reopening.

You might think mental toughness means never making mistakes. Mental toughness is more about your ability to recover from missteps. But obsessing over mental toughness can backfire, experts say: Instead of putting your mistakes in the rearview mirror, you might start fixating on them, internally berating yourself in an attempt at self-motivation. Balancing your mental toughness with self-compassion — or, convincing yourself that you're capable of improving — can help. "They say, 'You're too kind with yourself, you're not going to make it.'
Disney executive Joe Earley was named president of Hulu in January. "This is the best outcome for them," said a former Hulu executive, noting that Earley's "superpower" is navigating the type of complicated internal conflicts that have plagued the streamer's leaders. Under Earley, Hulu will have "an advocate," the former executive said. Many in Hollywood believe Disney hasn't taken Hulu international because it doesn't want to further boost the platform's overall valuation. It will also be Earley's job to redefine the Hulu brand once it becomes 100% owned by Disney.
